National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Mahama has attacked Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, warning that schools non-performing schools risk of being closed.

Dr. Adwutwum lamented that some schools consistently achieve a 0 to 10% pass rate and their students graduate only to become a burden on their parents instead of continuing their education.

He said the existence of non-performing schools is a financial burden on the government, so if they remain non-performing, it should be closed to avoid wasting resources.

Mahama, visiting the Ahafo Ano Southeast Constituency of Ashanti Region, said the Ministory of Education has a responsibility to improve the conditions and performance of schools rather than shutting them down.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum
“The government needs to sit down and assess the reasons why schools are not performing” he said. Perhaps they don’t have adequate teachers or furniture to facilitate their study, so they can perform.

“The idea of the Minister of Education to close non-performing schools and enroll students in other schools is unacceptable and insensitive to me.”

Mahama justified the government’s decision to build community high schools to address infrastructure challenges in the country.
