Meaning of Curriculum

The curriculum is a series of planned, standards-based experiences where students practice and master the content and applied learning skills.

The curriculum is the primary guide for all educators on what is needed for teaching and learning, so that every student has access to rigorous learning experiences.

The structure, organization, and considerations of a curriculum are designed to enhance student learning and facilitate instruction.

The curriculum should include the goals, methods, materials, and assessments necessary to effectively support teaching and learning.

Goal
Curriculum goals are standards-based benchmarks or expectations for teaching and learning.

Often, goals are made clear in terms of the scope and sequence of skills to be addressed.

Goals should include the breadth and depth of learning that the student expects.

method
Methods are the instructional decisions, approaches, processes, and habits that teachers use to engage all students in meaningful learning.

These choices aid in facilitating learning experiences that promote students’ ability to understand and apply content and skills.

Methods are differentiated to meet student needs and interests, task requirements, and learning environment. Methods are adjusted based on ongoing review of student progress toward goals.

Materials
Materials are the tools of choice for implementing methods and achieving curriculum objectives.

Materials are intentionally selected to support student learning. Selection of materials that reflect student interests, cultural diversity, global perspectives, and cater to all different types of learners.

Assessment
Assessment in a curriculum is the ongoing process of gathering information about student learning.

This includes a variety of ways to document what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge and skills.

Information from the assessment is used to make decisions about instructional methods, instructional materials, and learning supports needed to enhance student opportunities and guide future instruction.
