President Akufo-Addo launched the Ghana Education Outcomes Project (GEOP) at a special ceremony in Accra.
The project aims to bring back 70,000 out-of-school children and improve learning outcomes at more than 600 GALOP schools in 29 districts across the country.
Organized under the theme of “Getting All Children educated Through Supporting Schools and Communities”, the launch attracted hundreds of education stakeholders such as the World Bank, the High Commissioners, various institutions and organizations, non-governmental agencies, agencies under the Ministry of Education Metropolitan /Municipal and District chief executive and among other dignitaries.
In his speech on behalf of the President, Mr. Yaw Osafo Marfo, Senior Advisor to the President, praised the World Bank for supporting the development of the country in many ways.
He explained that the Ministry of Finance signed a funding agreement with the World Bank on June 21, 2020, attesting to the government’s commitment to bringing the best education to the country.
“These 70,000 children will follow a powerful Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) known as Complementary Basic Education (CBE), a nine-month program in which children will be training to learn life skills, basic numeracy and literacy skills through this period”.
He explained that in the past few years, the country has made significant achievements in the field of education and hopes that this GEOP will go a long way in promoting the development of education in the country.
Dr. Scherezad Latif, World Bank Educational Practice Officer for West and Central Africa, commended the government, Ministry of Education and their agencies for demonstrating ownership of GEOP.
She pledged to continue making efforts for the project to achieve its goals for the development of education in the country.
The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, in his welcome speech, expressed optimism that the project will be carried out by all stakeholders to ensure that all Ghanaian children can get an education for the benefit of the country and the rest of the world.
He commended the GEOP Coordinator, Nana Fatima High, for her efforts in launching the project which will be of great help in improving the development of education in the country. Dr Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe, assured the nation that everything will be done to ensure the success of the project.
Background
The government, in an effort to make education fair by bringing children back into the classroom, has partnered with the Foreign Commonwealth Development Organization (FCDO).

This partnership aims to improve the quality of education in Ghana in underperforming junior schools and promote equity and accountability in the education sector through the Ghana Education Outcomes Project.
Funding for the project is US$25.5 million, funded by the Foreign Commonwealth Development Organization (FCDO) through the Global Partnership Results-Based Approaches Trust Fund (GPRBA) -TF) and US$4.5 million in counterpart funding from the government of Ghana.
