At a time when many young people are misusing social media, Abubakari Swalihu, a local mechanic from Tamale, has chosen to use it differently for innovation. Motivated by a Chinese YouTuber, Swalihu challenged himself to build a functional 5G vehicle using locally available materials.

Despite limited resources, Swalihu managed to power the vehicle using a motoking engine, completing the entire build using 13 months.

According to him, “I watched a video on YouTube of a Chinese man inventing something like this, but it was a wooden one. So when I saw it, I guess it just came to my mind that I have to do something similar. So that was when I came out with this.”

I started it on April 30th 2020 which cost me about 26,000+. People were discouraging me that it would not work. They even call me a madman because of starting that kind of invention” He added

He says this is just the beginning and believes with proper support, he could build something even better.

He’s appealing to government institutions and individuals to support young talent with tools and resources to enhance their skills and productivity.

In recognition of his efforts, a team from the University for Development Studies UDS led by Engineer Dr. Enoch, Head of the mechanical engineering department visited his workshop for an assessment.

The University says it will explore possible collaborations with Swalehu to help refine his innovations and inspire other young innovators.
