The recent clash between residents of Karaga and the military has tragically claimed one life and left three others injured by gunfire.
Tensions ignited when a new regent was purportedly appointed following the passing of a self-proclaimed chief of the community.
In 2022, Yaa Naa Mahamadu Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, designated Mahami Natogmah as the rightful chief of Karaga.
However, the former regent contested this decision and persisted in holding the position, asserting his authority as the chief.
After the demise of the self-proclaimed chief, his supporters attempted to instate his eldest son as the new regent. This move led to a gathering at the regent’s residence on Monday, where clashes erupted between supporters and the military, who intervened to disperse the assembly.
The situation quickly escalated into violence, with reports of individuals throwing stones at the military, culminating in gunfire that resulted in three gunshot injuries and one fatality.
Currently, a curfew has been imposed in the area, with additional security personnel deployed to restore and maintain peace and order.
