A quiet Saturday night turned into a devastating scene of grief and frantic rescue efforts in Ghana’s Eastern Region. On August 29, 2026, an illegal gold mining pit collapsed at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District, leaving seven miners confirmed dead and four others feared trapped beneath tons of loose earth.
Around 11:00 p.m., a group of 11 miners was working late-night shifts underground when the unstable walls of the excavated pit suddenly gave way. Two surface-level workers witnessed the collapse and rushed to neighboring communities to seek emergency help.
By Sunday morning, joint rescue teams had retrieved seven bodies from the rubble. Five of the deceased victims were identified as residents of the neighboring town of Moseaso, while the remaining two were members of the Asaman Tamfoe community.
Heavy earthmoving equipment and excavators have been deployed to the site as personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, and community volunteers continue the high-stakes search for the four missing miners.
